BraaiBoy Turns 3 - And You're Invited!

by BraaiBoy 17. April 2012 13:01

I can't believe it's been 3 years since I stood around a braai and a joke/dare resulted in me braaing every day for a year. I could get all soppy and tell you about how awesome the last 3 years have been and all the wonderful people I've met etc. Instead, I'm going to tell you what you and I will be doing to celebrate this milestone.

On the 27th April @ 12h00, you need to get down to Arcade Empire for an epic Party. The kind folk over at Ignite will make sure we've got more than enough hot coals, and you are welcome to either bring your own meat or pre-book a braai pack. Arcade Empire will be selling some Pap & Vleis and salads if you need something on the side as well. There's also a very strong rumour doing the rounds that I'm going to have some taste-testers of my new BraaiBoy Boerewors (which is going to be available in your local butchery soon) - so you might get a chance to taste it here before everyone else.

What's this about drinking games?

Drinking Games Most parties I end up at end up involve some sort of drinking game at some point, and in keeping with that tradition, we've invited the guys from JPB Media to come film us during these drinking games. Also, if you've got a party trick of your own, come show us and we'll share it with everyone on YouTube. The shots for these games are sponsored by Lovoka, and unless you've been living in a cave, you'll know how lekker Lovoka Caramel is. What you might not know is how lekker their chocolate vodka also tastes - so come try it out on the day.
Beer Pong Tournament Bring a buddy and your A-Game and you could be one of 16 teams competiting for top honours. Mamba Spirit Coolers are sponsoring the shots in this tournament and teams will be playing with the Green, Red and Black Mamba spirit coolers. In addition to a case of Green Mamba, the winning team is walking away with an awesome braai from FatBoy Fires valued at R4, 000.

For those that made it last year, you'll remember I shared my Birthday with WonderBra's National Cleavage Day (Boobs, Beer & BraaiBoy). This year National Cleavage Day happened in March already... but that doesn't mean we're not still going to have a huge party. After all the braaing is done, you should stay on and rock out with UK Band, Scoundrels, being supported by local legends like The December Streets & City of Heroes. There's no cover charge to join us for the braai and drinking games, but 50 bucks will get you in to watch the bands afterwards.

Got any questions? Please get in touch, or give me a shout on twitter or facebook... otherwise I'll see you at the party!

Dude, where's my braai [pics]

by BraaiBoy 4. April 2012 08:27

OK, so I had the pleasant experience of becoming a statistic this morning and as a result have lost a couple days' braai pics :-(

While we were sound asleep in bed, somebody decided that they would be able to make better use of my property and came to collect it for themselves. Unfortunately that property included my laptop with my braai pictures from the last 3 days. Replacing computers, camera and other material things are easy enough if you've got insurance, but it's the data on those things that can't be replaced, and as a result... for the first time in 3 years, I've got a 3-day gap in my daily braai pics. May those bastards rot in hell!

at least I've still got my braai apron

Along with mud and shit traipsed through the house, at least they left me with my apron :-)

The house is of course littered with evidence, and I can see prints on the windows and door with the naked eye, but the highly motivated and enthusiastic SAPS guys that rocked up let me know that someone will come collect fingerprints in "a couple of days, definitely not today or tomorrow". Now, I haven't passed any police academy training or anything like that, but surely the sooner you get to a crime scene, the more likely you are to solve the crime? So... if any of you are buddies with Horatio, let me know so that I can get him and his team in here - SAPS clearly aren't very interested in solving anything.

braai pics theft escape route braai pics theft escape route

All my shit went THAT way... :-(

they left me with some papers

and I'm guessing when you steal for a living, you don't need paperwork?

How the English Braai

by BraaiBoy 3. April 2012 10:23

Yesterday's discovery that we invented braaing reminded me about an email I got from Phil Burlace a while ago, letting me know that other countries also enjoy a good old braai, they're just not as good at it.

Phil says:

I'm English but now living in South Africa......now I know our rugby is not too hot at the moment, but the Great British BB-Q would have you okes in fits of hysteria -let me explain.

As you may well be aware we are blessed with only one or two days of sunshine every year. The appearance of that big orange ball in the sky does strange things to our psyche.

Now if the mini heatwave happens to occur on a Sunday, the men of the house will wind their way to the local pub at lunchtime and proceed to down overpriced fizzy beer. At some stage in the proceedings one member of the throng will suggest a BBQ.

It then falls upon the soberest to drive down to the local supermarket and bulk buy frozen sausages, beefburgers and chicken legs.

The drunken throng then descend on whichever house has a BBQ. These vary from gas powered monsters to discarded oil drums.

Half a metric tonne of coals are then put down into the cooking utensil.

There then follows a debate on how to get the thing alight. Traditional methods include heaping up the weeks supply of free newspapers but the chosen method here is usually a half litre or so of Shell unleaded.

When the chosen one has thrown the match into the mound great applause follows as the guys watch this reenactment of Dante's Inferno.

As the flames reach rooftop height the plastic bags containing the processed meats are ripped open and tossed into the furnace.

As soon as the portions resemble napalm victims they will be hauled out by a man in an asbestos suit and served with limp salad and more fizzy beer.

So that, folks is how its done in England - which is why I'm glad I have been taught how to braai properly by you guys.......it's the only way to cook.

Fortunately for our English friends, help is at hand... remember James Braai 0027?

Braaing: It's in our Blood

by BraaiBoy 2. April 2012 18:28

OK, so we finally know why South Africans love to braai so much... it's because we invented it.

Scientists have uncovered what they believe is earliest evidence of a camp fire, in a cave in South Africa, dating back about a million years. Prior to the discovery, there wasn't much consensus on when our ancestors mastered the art of fire, so until further evidence is uncovered, I'm claiming the invention of braaing for South Africa.

Jalapeno Poppers Recipe

by BraaiBoy 20. March 2012 18:12
If you've been following me for some time, you'll know how much I love the Braai Pie. Today I tried something that comes in a very close second for favourite recipe... I present to you the Jalapeno Popper.

This delicious little snack, consists of just Jalapeno peppers, cheese and bacon, yet they combine to create a mouthgasm of note.

Jalapeno Poppers Braaied Jalapeno Poppers

As you might know, Jalapenos aren't the hottest of chillies, so even if your friends are wusses, they'll probably still enjoy it (make sure you clean out alll the pith and seeds properly though).

If you want the step by step recipe instructions how to make this awesome little snack... check here: Jalapeno Popper Recipe.

I'd love to hear your comments below, or you can always give me a shout on twitter or facebook... otherwise I'll catch around the braai!

Something new to try with Sweet Potatoes

by BraaiBoy 1. March 2012 19:17

I was having a chat with some of the guys on Facebook and the topic of potatoes in the coals came up. These are very simple to do and it reminded me that sweet potatoes work just as well and not many people actually incorporate them into their braais. So with this evenings braai I added a couple of sweet potatoes, and man were they good.

Sweet Potatoes with Butter and Honey

It's amazing what some butter and honey will do.

It's really not that hard, and I'm sure you guys can figure it out... but if you're looking for the step-by-step guide, check here: Sweet Potatoes Recipe

I'd love to hear your comments below, or you can always give me a shout on twitter or facebook... otherwise I'll catch around the braai!
